Santos is a municipality located on the coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. It has the largest port in Latin America, which is its main economic activity, along with tourism and trade. The city is home to the state every 13 June. Symbolic capital of São Paulo, home as well as various institutions of higher education. It is officially considered a tourist resort. In this city are located the Santos Futebol Clube, a famous football club where Pele played his entire career in Brazil and the Portuguese Santista.


The city is known for providing its residents an excellent quality of life and has an index 0.871 Human Development (2000), according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Santos is divided into two distinct geographic areas: the island area and the mainland. Both differ in demographic terms, as in economic and geographical terms.

Saints Cathedral is a Catholic church in the city of Santos in São Paulo, Brazil. It is the seat of the Diocese Santos and the Parish of Our Lady of Aparecida Rosario, the oldest in the city.

The old church of Saints, the predecessor of the present cathedral was demolished in 1907 for being in an advanced state of deterioration. In 1909 construction began on the new church, the temple currently under design German engineer Maximilian Emil Hehl, professor of the Polytechnic School of Sao Paulo. Hehl designed a Gothic style church in fashion at that time, with a dome over the crossing of Renaissance style. In general, the project is similar to the Catedral Metropolitana de São Paulo, designed by the same Hehl.

The church, still unfinished, was opened temporarily in 1924, with a Mass celebrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop Leopoldo Duarte e Silva. In 1925 he created the Diocese of Saints by Pope Pius XI, and the temple was elevated to cathedral. The works of the church would not be completed until 1967.

The entrance to the cathedral is guarded by statues of St. Peter and St. Paul, while the tower is decorated with sculptures of the prophets and the four evangelists.
